Heart Wood Place is the Favorite
Bed and Breakfast of Adrian, MI

Mary Alice Thompson, Bed and Breakfast Owner

Mary Alice Thompson

Heart Wood Place, a favorite Bed and Breakfast in Southeastern Michigan, grew out of a passion to help others. Mary Alice Thompson, the founder of Heart Wood Place, had a vision for the Bed and Breakfast, along with Spa Therapy Services, and built these into featured businesses within Lenawee County, Michigan.

Heart Wood Place Bed and Breakfast and Day Spa

Mary Alice Thompson is the owner/operator of the Heart Wood Place. A wellness-based retreat center focusing on the entire person was a dream and it became her reality in Heart Wood Place.

“From the time I was a very small child, I was led to alternative services. I had an aunt who was a nurse, whom I admired, and I wanted to grow up to be someone who would help others.”

Mary Alice had worked as a nurse for over 30 years when she decided she was ready for something more. She wanted to be on the wellness and prevention end of health care, so in 1988 she enrolled at the Health Enrichment Center’s School of Therapeutic Massage. In June of 1989 she received her certificate as a certified Massage Therapist.

While still working part-time as a nurse, she began to build a massage clientele out of her home. As her clientele grew, she quit her nursing job and built an addition on their home to accommodate her growing business.

“I saw an opportunity to provide more caring for the person than what some traditional practices allowed, and I found a greater awareness of holistic medicine.”

The Vision of Heart Wood Place Grows with a Bed and Breakfast

Shortly thereafter, the idea of “Heart Wood Place” encompassed her thoughts and dreams.

“As we grew up, there was never a stranger at the door; our hospitality was always to invite others in for a piece of pie or something for them to relax and enjoy themselves. There are a lot of similarities between a Bed and Breakfast and Holistic Care.”

She knew exactly what she wanted from the building layout, to expand her services and add a Bed & Breakfast to her repertoire. Months of planning were completed, construction was underway, and Heart Wood Place was open for business in December of 1995.

“We offer things here that aren’t offered anywhere else in the county. My definition of a Day Spa is a complete escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Join that with a Bed and Breakfast in a tranquil, country setting, and you have the perfect getaway for yourself.”

Mary Alice wears a great multitude of hats within her business and community. She works very hard, but finds the rewards of a successful business, that positively touches the lives of so many people.

Maryann and Mic Davis

Maryann is a wife, mother, grandmother and registered nurse.

Through her years of nursing, she has always felt that there is “something more”. That something “more” is energy work.

The premise is that everything is energy and we have an energy system that is associated with health. This is the same energy system used in acupuncture. When there is stress, an illness or injury, there is an imbalance in the energy system.

Energy balancing techniques work to restore harmony and balance the energy system. It promotes relaxation that can help reduce stress, relieve pain and support health. It is done with the person fully clothed, and resting on a massage table or in a chair. It complements traditional health care and is used in collaboration with other approaches in health and healing.

In the February 2010 issue of AARP magazine, Reiki and massage were included as complementary techniques that can help with pain.

In 1990, Maryann was introduced to the concept of healing energy, during a seminar on “Therapeutic Touch”, a program developed by Dolores Krieger, R.N., Ph.D. in the 1970′s. She continued her education, becoming a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner, a program developed by Janet Mentgen, B.S.N., R.N., endorsed by the American Holistic Nursing Association. She is a Reiki (pronounced ray-key) Master/teacher and Esoteric Healing practitioner.

Maryann has studied many other modalities including homeopathy, Healing Touch Spiritual Ministry, aromatherapy, meditation, Flower of Life, Touch for Health, Munay-Ki, and nutritional healing.

Appointments for energy balancing sessions, classes, Reiki share groups, support before/after surgery and through life changes are available.
